    What the term covers

Computer-generated imagery describes any visual content created in software rather than captured by a camera. In a commercial context it covers four broad categories: still product imagery, animated video, visual effects added to filmed footage, and content built for large-format or interactive displays. The techniques overlap, but the briefs and budgets differ substantially.

The business case rests on three properties. Imagery can be produced without the physical object existing. It can be modified without reshooting. And it can depict things that cannot be photographed at all โ€” cutaways, impossible camera moves, processes that occur at scales no lens can reach.

The cost structure, which is the part most people get wrong

Photography has a fairly flat cost curve: each new shoot costs roughly what the last one did. 3D production is front-loaded. The first asset is expensive because the model, materials and lighting have to be built from nothing. Every subsequent use of that asset is comparatively cheap.

This means the question is never whether CGI is cheaper than photography in general. It is whether your particular asset will be used enough times to cross the break-even point. A product photographed once for one campaign should probably be photographed. A product that will appear in fifty contexts over three years should probably be modelled.

    Where businesses apply it

Retail and e-commerce use it to cover large catalogues and configurable products. Manufacturers use it for technical visualisation of equipment that is too large, too expensive or too dangerous to film. Healthcare and pharmaceutical companies use it to depict processes inside the body. Property developers use it to show buildings before construction. Games and entertainment use it for the obvious reasons.

Most firms encounter it first through advertising, which is where the work is most visible. Reviewing CGI advertisement examples across a few sectors is a quick way to calibrate expectations, because the gap between competent and exceptional work is far more apparent in motion than in a still frame.

    Choosing a supplier

The decisive question is specialisation. Architectural visualisation, product rendering, character animation and film effects are genuinely different disciplines, and a studio excellent at one may be merely adequate at another. Ask for work in your material category โ€” fabric, liquid, metal, skin โ€” rather than work you simply find striking.

Beyond the portfolio, examine the commercial terms. Who owns the source files? How many revisions are included? What is the policy when the brief changes mid-production? A 3D CGI company that answers these plainly in writing is a safer partner than one that deflects, regardless of how strong the reel is.

    A realistic first project

Start with one asset that has obvious reuse: a flagship product, a piece of equipment central to your offering, a process you explain repeatedly. Specify the deliverables fully, secure the source files, and record how long the second and third variants take to produce compared with the first.

That comparison is the whole business case. Teams that run it find out within a quarter whether the approach fits their situation. A studio such as Acquisition.mobi CGI studio that works across illustration, animation and advertising can usually advise on which starting point will give you the clearest read, which is worth more at this stage than an impressive first render.
