For most people, philanthropy is an act of giving back. For Louis Chênevert, it eventually became something even more personal: an investment that would one day save his own life.

Long before he became a patient, the former Chairman and CEO of United Technologies Corporation (UTC) had devoted years to strengthening cancer care at Yale. He joined the Yale Cancer Center Advisory Board in 2000 and in 2013, he was named its Chairman.

Together with his wife, Debbie, Mr. Chênevert also played a key role in one of Yale’s most ambitious fundraising campaigns for Smilow Cancer Hospital. The state-of-the-art facility opened at Yale New Haven Health in 2009. More than a decade later, after surviving brain cancer, he deepened that commitment with another transformative gift, establishing the Chênevert Family Brain Tumor Center at Yale.

    Building a World-Class Cancer Hospital

When Smilow Cancer Hospital opened its doors in October 2009, it represented an integrated model for cancer treatment. The 14-story, 500,000-square-foot hospital was designed to bring together clinical care, research, and patient services under one roof, enabling physicians and scientists to collaborate more closely while providing patients with access to cutting-edge therapies in a purpose-built environment. The $467 million facility has significantly expanded Yale’s ability to treat cancer and reinforced its position as one of the nation’s leading comprehensive cancer centers.

Five years in the making, the hospital at its inauguration was the largest healthcare construction project in Connecticut’s history. It was also completed on time and under budget. A few days after the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the facility opened its doors to admit its first radiation therapy patient and was fully operational within a few months.

The hospital was made possible thanks to a major gift from philanthropists Joel and Joan Smilow, but bringing the project to life also required an extraordinary fundraising effort involving many civic and business leaders. Among the most influential were Louis and Debbie Chênevert, who co-chaired a capital campaign that, with the Smilows’ gift, raised nearly half a billion dollars to make the vision a reality. UTC, which Mr. Chênevert led as president and CEO at the time, also provided a $1 million donation.

The Chêneverts’ leadership helped mobilize donors, corporations, and community supporters around a shared goal: creating a world-class cancer hospital for Connecticut and beyond.

    A Longstanding Partnership with Yale

For Mr. Chênevert, the commitment stemmed from what he witnessed after moving to Connecticut in the mid-1990s when he was named EVP Operations of UTC subsidiary Pratt & Whitney. As he met employees and their families, he noted with surprise how many had been affected by cancer.

That experience prompted him to join the Yale Cancer Center Advisory Board in 2000; he was named Chairman of the Board in 2013 and still continues in that role today. His business leadership and great zeal for motivating people around common goals made him an important advocate for expanding Yale’s cancer programs and strengthening connections between the medical center and the community.

Neither Mr. Chênevert nor his family imagined that their investment in cancer care would someday become deeply personal.

    From Philanthropist to Patient

Less than two years after his December 2014 retirement from UTC, Mr. Chênevert was diagnosed with Stage IV primary central nervous system lymphoma, an aggressive cancer that had produced multiple tumors in his brain. The prognosis was not hopeful. Physicians treated him with intensive chemotherapy and an autologous stem cell transplant, rebuilding his immune system using his own previously harvested stem cells. The treatment was successful, and he entered remission after receiving care at Yale—the very institution he had spent decades supporting.

“It never occurred to me that I would one day benefit from our commitment,” Mr. Chênevert reflected, speaking to the Montréal news outlet La Presse in 2019. “We did it for the community, but I benefited enormously from it.”

    Giving Back Again

Rather than viewing his recovery as the end of the journey, Chênevert saw it as the beginning of a new mission.

In February 2021, the Chênevert Family Foundation made a $4.3 million donation to establish the Chênevert Family Brain Tumor Center at Yale Cancer Center. The center was created to accelerate research into brain tumors by bringing together experts in neuro-oncology, neurosurgery, neuroscience, genomics, and immunology. Its goal is to translate laboratory discoveries into new clinical trials and more effective treatments for patients facing some of the most challenging forms of cancer.

    A Lasting Legacy

Today, the Chênevert Family Brain Tumor Center serves as a multidisciplinary hub for research, treatments, and innovation. Physicians from neurosurgery, radiation oncology, medical oncology, neurology, neuroradiology, and pathology provide care while pursuing new therapies and clinical trials for patients with both primary and metastatic brain tumors. Smilow Cancer Hospital stands today as one of the country’s leading centers for cancer treatment and research, serving thousands of patients each year and treating more patients with cancer than any other hospital in Connecticut.

The evolution of Chênevert’s relationship with Yale—from advisory board member, to fundraising leader, to patient, and to major benefactor whose name appears on one of its leading research centers—is remarkable. Few donors ever experience every dimension of an institution’s mission so personally.
